The municipality of Piat in the Province of Cagayan celebrated its 28th Sambali Festival with various activities to offer. The said festivity is a week-long celebration that started on the 23rd of June and ending on the 2nd of July, the feast day of Nuestra Señora de Piat.

One of the highlights of the week-long celebration is the crowning of this year’s Miss Piat with 11 lovely candidates representing different barangays and various organizations in the municipality competing for the major title.

The candidates showed their poise and elegance as they took the stage with their ethnic attires and evening gowns. The contestants also displayed their confidence in the swimsuit competition but only six qualified for the final round in which they delivered very witty answers and ideas to questions on tourism, culture and current events.

The pageant is a celebration of beauty and talent and an opportunity to showcase the rich culture and traditions of the Piateños.

The word sambali means “war” in the Malaweg dialect. It is depicted through dance between different tribes. Other activities held were novenas, Piat Sikat, Little Miss Piat and the famous Sambali Parade where the war dance is performed in the streets of the town together with colorful street dancing, evening shows and cultural presentations.

Piat is famously known to pilgrims because of the miraculous Our Lady of Piat and earned the monicker Pilgrimage Center of the North. The Lady of Piat is also called as the Black Virgin Mary because of its color being brown. The Ybanags call her Yena Tam Ngamin and to the natives of Piat as Apo Baket.
